Get on board with safer driving this Bus Safety Week

Newcastle Transport is calling on drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycle riders and public transport users to “Be Bus Aware” this Bus Safety Week.

Today marks the start of Bus Safety Week an annual campaign highlighting the importance of bus safety for all road users and will run until Sunday 1 March.

Bus Operators have been reporting an increase in incidents with motorists failing to give way to buses when merging into traffic.

To highlight this issue, Newcastle Transport has released CCTV footage showing some close calls over the last six months.

Keolis Downer Hunter General Manager, Emmanuel Genlot says he hopes the vision will encourage the community to give way to buses and avoid cutting in front of a bus.

“Our drivers have a very good safety record but there are things that other road users can do to help us keep everyone safe.

“Buses are large, heavy vehicles and can’t stop quickly.

“It’s important to remember that buses have blind spots in front, at the back and at the sides so if you can’t see their mirrors, our drivers can’t see you.

“Here at Newcastle Transport, we have a fleet of almost 200 buses, completing over 1,300 trips across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie each day.

“With the increase in traffic in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, we’re asking the community to avoid cutting in front of and to give way to buses.

“By keeping a safe distance, you keep yourself and everyone on the bus safe.”
